Research data

Research data is all data that is generated, developed, or evaluated in the course of a research process or is based on it.

RDM information

In accordance with good scientific practice, research processes and results must be documented and managed in a comprehensible manner.

The University Library supports you in your research data management (RDM) according to the FAIR principles: Is your data “Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable”?

LMU Munich regulations for ensuring good scientific research practice (in German)

The FAIR data principles (in German)

To make research data management efficient, individual planning is required for the collection, publication, archiving, and reuse of data.

The RDM information offers a service that can be used regardless of faculty affiliation.

It is aimed at students and researchers at LMU Munich.

Information portal Research Data LMU

The RDM information portal Research Data LMU serves as a central point of contact and networking platform for research data management at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and is aimed at LMU members from all disciplines.

The portal provides comprehensive resources, tools, and information to support the effective management of research data at LMU Munich, and to facilitate its planning, organization, storage, analysis, and publication. The resources include discipline-specific guidelines, training materials, best practices, and as information on contact points for discipline-specific questions relating to research data management (RDM).

Research Data LMU is continuously being developed and expanded with new content. If you offer services, courses, or other activities in the field of research data management, please let us know. We will then include them in the portal.

Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELNs)

ELNs are software solutions designed for the centralized, secure, and easily searchable documentation of the research process. They offer, for example, functions for:

  • Structured data collection with timestamps, signatures, and backups
  • Collaborative work
  • Integration with various programs and devices (API interfaces)

You can find general and LMU specific information about ELNs on Research Data LMU.

The University Library offers a centrally managed open-source ELN software solution for LMU members. Two main instances and one test server of eLabFTW are available:

TUM members can also sign up for collaborative purposes. Support for creating a team for your group or joining an existing eLabFTW team can be found on Research Data LMU.

In addition, the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy hosts the Chemotion ELN for department members.

Research Data Management Organizer (RDMO)

RDMO is provided by the University Library of LMU Munich and supports researchers in the structured planning, implementation, and documentation of research data management. RDMO enables among other things:

  • The creation of funding-compliant data management plans (e.g. DFG, ERC/Horizon Europen, VolkswagenStiftung),
  • the structured planning and management of research data management tasks throughout a project,
  • the reuse of information already recorded in project workflows,
  • the export of information as text documents for funding applications or reports,
  • the creation of a project-specific research data policy or software management plan.

RDMO can thus support research data management throughout the entire project lifecycle and help researchers capture relevant information centrally and in a structured manner.

Research Data Repository Open Data LMU

With Open Data LMU, the University Library provides a repository for the publication of research data.

Researchers from all LMU faculties and institutions associated to the LMU are invited to store their research data on this platform. This enables them to make their data available to the general public in accordance with the Budapest Open Access Initiative and the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities (in German), and to ensure its long-term availability. All data publications are assigned to a DOI.

In addition, publications can be linked to LMU via the Zenodo platform. The "Ludwig Maximilians-Universität München" community is available for all LMU members.
